The New Neighbour

When the family next door moved away, the old house was empty for a month. Sofia missed the noise of children playing in the garden.

One Saturday, a big lorry stopped in front of the house. A woman and a small boy got out. They were the new neighbours.

Sofia watched from her window. The woman carried many boxes, and she looked very tired. The boy stood alone on the path. He looked shy and a little sad.

Sofia's mother had an idea. "Let's make a cake," she said. "It is nice to welcome new people."

They baked a big chocolate cake. Then Sofia carried it carefully to the house next door and knocked on the door.

"Hello," Sofia said. "We live next door. This cake is for you."

The woman smiled. She looked very happy and surprised. "Thank you so much! Please, come in," she said.

The little boy's name was Leo. He was seven years old. Soon he and Sofia were in the garden, and Leo was not shy any more. They played football until it was dark.

"Can Sofia come again tomorrow?" Leo asked.

"Of course," said his mother.

That night, Sofia was very happy. A new neighbour had become a new friend, and it all started with one chocolate cake.
