The Night Shift Decision

For three years, Priya had worked the night shift at a busy hospital, and she had finally decided that something had to change.

She loved being a nurse. She loved the moment when a worried patient relaxed because she had explained things clearly. But the night hours were slowly wearing her down. She slept while the sun was up and worked while the city slept. She rarely saw her friends, and she had missed her best friend's wedding because she could not get the time off.

One morning, after a long shift, Priya sat in her car in the empty car park and made a promise to herself. If a day position opened up, she would apply for it, even if it meant earning a little less money. She was tired of feeling run-down all the time.

A week later, her manager, Mr Owusu, posted a notice on the staff board. A daytime nurse was needed on the children's ward. Priya's heart skipped a beat. This was exactly the chance she had been waiting for.

But there was a problem. Her colleague Sam wanted the same job, and Sam had a young daughter at home. Priya knew that the day shift would help him far more than it would help her. She wrestled with the decision all afternoon.

In the end, she went to Mr Owusu's office. "I'd like to apply for the day position," she said. "But I think you should know that Sam needs it more than I do. He has a child to look after. I'll step aside if it helps him."

Mr Owusu looked at her with surprise. "That's very generous, Priya. But I don't think you should have to choose."

He explained that the hospital had received funding for an extra daytime nurse. He had been planning to announce it that very week. There were two positions, not one.

Priya could hardly believe it. Both she and Sam could move to the day shift. She had been ready to give up her own chance for a colleague, and now nobody had to lose anything.

That night, she worked her last night shift. As the sun rose through the ward windows, she felt a kind of peace she had not felt in years. She watched the light spread across the floor and thought about how the morning would soon become a normal part of her life again.

Sometimes, she realised, doing the right thing does not cost you anything at all. Sometimes it gives you back more than you ever expected.
