The Surprise That Almost Wasn't
For three weeks, Leila had been secretly planning a surprise party for her best friend Sofia's thirtieth birthday.
It was harder than she had expected. She had to invite twenty people, book a private room at a restaurant, order a cake, and keep the whole thing hidden. The most difficult part was lying to Sofia, who kept asking what they were doing on Saturday. "Nothing special," Leila said each time, while her heart raced. She was a terrible liar.
The plan was simple. Leila would take Sofia out for a "quiet dinner, just the two of us." At eight o'clock, they would walk into the back room, where everyone would be hiding in the dark, ready to shout "Surprise!"
On Saturday, everything went wrong from the start. First, the restaurant called to say the cake delivery was running late. Then Sofia texted to say she had a headache and wanted to cancel. Leila stared at the message in horror. Three weeks of work were about to fall apart.
"Please come," Leila wrote back, trying to sound calm. "I've booked the table. We can leave early if you feel bad, I promise." It was not exactly a lie, she told herself, just a stretch of the truth.
Sofia agreed, but she arrived in old clothes and a grumpy mood. As they walked toward the back room, Leila's phone buzzed. It was a message from one of the guests: "We're all ready! Where are you?" She had forgotten to put her phone on silent, and the screen lit up right in front of Sofia's eyes.
Sofia stopped walking. "Ready for what?" she asked, narrowing her eyes.
Leila's mind went blank. "It's, um, a work thing," she said weakly. Sofia clearly did not believe her, but she shrugged and kept walking. Leila let out a breath she had been holding.
When they reached the door, Leila pushed it open. The room was completely silent and dark. For one awful moment, she thought everyone had left. Then the lights burst on and twenty voices shouted "SURPRISE!" all at once.
Sofia jumped, screamed, and then burst into tears. She turned to Leila, speechless. "You did all this? But I almost didn't come. I nearly ruined my own party."
"You very nearly did," Leila laughed, hugging her. "I've never lied so much in my life."
The cake arrived twenty minutes late, slightly squashed on one side, but nobody cared. Sofia kept saying it was the best birthday she had ever had. Later, as the music played, she put her arm around Leila and said, "Next time, just tell me to come. You're hopeless at secrets."
Leila grinned. She knew it was true, and for once she did not mind at all.
